Episode 30 - Batman Duct Tape
Works in Progress
[00:00:34] Mike is on pace for NaNoWriMo as of day 2, with his story Zero Ward. He's picking random chapters as to not worry about stalling out were he to write the story in order.
John decided at the last minute to do NaNoWriMo by writing a novelization of his role-playing game group's adventures. He figured it would be easy as he knows the characters and the plot really well already. So far that hasn't helped.
Eric had done no writing on account of illness in the house.
[00:03:55] John is trying to read Catch-22.
Life is too short for a book you're stuck on.
Mike hasn't been reading anything beyond the research for Zero Ward. All focus is on writing this month, so reading takes a backseat.
What's happening online
Plagiarism in Gay Romance
[00:06:22] Becky McGraw is a popular romance novelist who had a fan contact her asking if she had started writing gay romance under a pen name. It turns out "author" Laura Harner's gay romance Coming Home Texas was remarkably similar to McGraw's 2012 book My Kind of Trouble. Much of the descriptions were the same, although the genders and names had been altered as well as new, albeit short M/M love scenes had been added.
Harner may have thought the lack of overlap between her audience and McGraw's would allow her to get away with the plagiarism, but once caught she admitted she “violated her own code of ethics".
Harner said she realized she had “made mistakes”.
“I own them, and I will deal with the consequences. In transforming two M/F romance stories into an M/M genre, it appears that I may have crossed the line and violated my own code of ethics,”
This may not have been the only case of Harner's plagiarism, as about 10 additional books have been removed from Amazon.
[00:10:55] Life Is "Triggering." The Best Literature Should Be, Too. Some college students are asking for trigger warnings to be included for works of literature.
The Taxonomy of Spaceships

[00:15:52] John posed the question "How do you make your protagonist NOT BORING?"
The end product must be the emotional capture of the reader and happens when the character's actions reveal their true character.
We do a deep dive of John's drone story and how his main character needs an internal conflict.
This tied into something Eric found: Storyboard 75: The big book of narrative. This is the top 75 posts from the Nieman Foundation’s narrative writing program .
